8500 Leesburg Pike, Suite 602
Vienna, VA

Attendees:

Judy Perrault, President
Lisa Forester, Secretary
Jamey McNamara, Treasurer
Nancy Streeter, Communications Director
Robin Spivak, Vice President, Membership
Mary Saily, Asst Vice President, Programs
Cornelia Gamlem, Director at Large

Agenda:

The January Board meeting minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report:

Jamey provided a written report of the chapter income and expenses. The current balance is $5,225.64. Jamey will check with National SHRM on the status of the money due us. Jamey will respond to the request from Evelyn’s company for a Taxpayer ID Form. He’ll also pay our donation to the state conference.

Membership Report:

A reminder was sent the day of the Board Meeting to people who have not renewed memberships for 2003. Forty-two of last year’s members haven’t renewed membership thus far; one-hundred and two have renewed and paid; nine have returned renewal forms but have not paid. Any renewals received through 28 February will be included in the chapter directory.

Programs Report:

Amy was unable to attend the meeting, but passed notes to Judy. All sponsors are booked for 2003; she’s now working 2004. A proposal was raised that the Virginia Labor Studies Center be a sponsor in 2004. All agreed, and Amy will contact them.

The Board reviewed information Amy sent regarding a potential speaker. Judy will discuss this with Amy.

Mary will provide Nancy with a list she has of all 2003 sponsors so that she can update the web site.

All agreed that the Chapter will distribute HR books as door prizes at the chapter meetings and encourage winners to write book reports after they’ve read them.

Diversity Report:

No report

Communications Report:

Nancy will send another mailer/mailer this week. Newsletter will be big this month (will be distributed at the chapter meeting and on the web site.) There was discussion on a separate area on the web site with State Conference information and sharing our newsletter with other chapters.

Workforce Education Report:

Rich was unable to attend but advised us that he and Evelyn will visit the Skills Source Center to see how members can participate/volunteer.

Old Business:

Lisa distributed the new name badges. Those unable to attend the February Meeting can pick their badges up at the March Board Meeting.

The SIG is struggling to find facilitators. Judy will ask Bernadette to e-mail the list of HR disciplines to her that were developed previously. Judy will forward it to the Board for suggestions on facilitators.

There was discussion on the mechanics of the mentor/protégé program. Cindy suggested that mentors and protégés get together and develop a program that addresses their needs. Mary discussed a method she’s familiar with whereby the entire group of mentors and protégés meet five times per year. One meeting is devoted to a discussion of mechanics and goals, etc. Then a different mentor meets with a different protégé each meeting. Judy will ask at the chapter meeting for volunteers to work on development of this program.

Thank you to Kurt for getting our chapter meetings certified.

Cindy advised that the Vendor Discussion Group went well.

Cornelia advised that Alice Waagen will head the Volunteers Committee at the State Conference and is the point of contact for those interested in volunteering.

New Business:

Cindy discussed what’s scheduled for the remainder of the year for the Chapter Discussion Groups and what additional topics she’s considering.

The pass rate of the Certification Exam was discussed. Seventeen took our chapter’s class to prepare for the exam. One-third of those who took the class did not take the exam. Results will be reported in the newsletter. Eileen, the instructor, thought the allotted class time should be lengthened from two hours to two-and-one-half or three hours.

Judy will ask Kurt if he can speak at the chapter meeting next week about his role as the Certification Representative.

The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
