Agenda:
The February 2004 Board meeting minutes were approved.
Treasurers Report
Judy Carter reported that the bank account balance is $24,025.22. We still have the $16,000 from the State Conference in our checking account and discussed whether we should move it to some other type of account. Nancy recommends that we put part of our funds in some kind of interest-bearing account, perhaps a stock account. The Board will consider this and make recommendations on other financial vehicles at a later date. Mary said she could ask an acquaintance who’s familiar with investments for his recommendation. Kurt also said that BB&T who administers our checking account should be able to provide some recommendations.
Nancy asked if we could get details each month on what we pay the hotel and what we collect from members at each meeting. Judy said she should be able to do that. She’ll contact the no-shows for meetings and request payment. Kurt thinks we should go as far back as the January meeting.
Judy mentioned that she’d like to be able to on-line banking, which would entail a small monthly fee. All agreed.
Membership Report
Bonnie reported that we have about 120 applications for 2004 chapter membership, of which 90 have paid. The cutoff date for inclusion in the chapter directory will be April 1st; only those with paid memberships will be included.
National SHRM does an annual audit to ensure their list of chapter affiliations matches our membership list. It won’t be done again until Fall 2004.
Programs Report
Cindy mentioned that a concern was voiced from a member regarding the February meeting (Strategic Interactions presentation). Amy reported that ratings for the February meeting were “not bad”. Although she thinks they rated higher the last time they were at Dulles SHRM, the comments received this time were favorable. Nancy recommended that the format for the February presentation not be repeated.
There were no changes to report on future speakers and sponsors.
Cindy passed on Evelyn’s suggestion regarding “Workplace Accommodations” as a meeting topic. We’ll discuss this at the next meeting when Evelyn can provide details.
Amy mentioned that it’s not necessary for Evelyn to do introductions for the Workforce Development representatives who speak briefly before each meeting. It was recommended that the President do an extremely short introduction for this.
Communications Report
Nancy asked for a list of new members from Bonnie, both for Newsletter purposes and for Chapter Discussion Group notices.
Diversity and Workforce Education Report
Evelyn was absent.
Legislative Update
Mary Lynn reported that the Feb 20th SHRM governmental conference call on FLSA changes was helpful. We still don’t know the effective date of the changes, etc. It could bounce around until after the election-anywhere from April 1 to December 31. There was some discussion about having FLSA as a discussion group topic. Amy didn’t think so. Kurt mentioned that national SHRM does a good job of getting those interested involved in contacting government representatives, etc. (There may not be a discussion group meeting in April.)
Mary Lynn is waiting for the Legislative Conference to end to see if a Capitol Hill visit is worthwhile later this year.
Old Business:
a. Member Survey. Mary reported a 30% response rate to the survey-the standard rate is 25%. The “hottest” topic was “Employee Relations/Morale”. In terms of importance to membership, the most important benefit of the meetings is “networking”. The next in importance was “Learning-Dinner Speakers”. Mary will review the survey results more closely with Amy and discuss individual comments at the next meeting.
b. Question of the Month. All agreed it went well in February and should continue at the March meeting. “What professional certifications do you hold?” will be the question.
c. Kurt will send out draft by-laws.
d. Maggie mentioned that not all who’ve passed the certification test are listed on the HRCI website. Kurt recommends getting that information from Eileen.
New Business:
a. Shelly Prochaska, SE Region 2 Manager, wants to visit our chapter. All agreed to invite Shelly to our July 13 Board Meeting and she can do a presentation.
b. Focus Group - SHRM Member Satisfaction Survey. This could be handled during the networking hour or as a Discussion Group meeting. Amy advised that it’s hard enough to fit the networking time in and recommends against using that time for this purpose. Bonnie thinks a morning meeting would be better. Bonnie agreed to develop a random list of 40 member names and we’ll provide it to the SHRM representative and we’ll leave it to him to make contact and all arrangements. If it’s going to occur on the night of a chapter meeting it will have to be held from 4-5pm, but not during meeting time.
c. The Regents University Leadership Meeting is April 23rd. Judy Perrault may attend if she’s able. Cindy mentioned that donation of door prizes was mentioned. Judy doesn’t recall the requirement to provide donations previously.
d. Cindy won’t be able to chair the April Board Meeting, so Kurt will do it. It will be held at Mitre in Tysons.
e. Adreanne Simms resigned as Student Chapter Liaison. We need another representative.
f. Kurt will contact Richard Gould and find out what his status is as Foundation Rep and Scholarship Coordinator. He has not been attending meetings. All agreed that Board openings should be announced to the membership. Cindy agreed to announce this at the Chapter Meeting.
g. New Member Orientation. The details on this are still being worked.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m. The next Board Meeting is scheduled for April 12th at Mitre.
