Communications Report:

Nancy was unable to attend, but Judy reported all is well regarding communications.

Workforce Education Report:

Rich discussed the Memorandum of Understanding regarding our sponsorship of the NLU Student Chapter. Lisa will print the MOU on chapter stationery and get Judy’s signature. Rich will bring it to NLU for their signature.

Evelyn discussed Job Clubs and asked if the board would support this. The Leesburg SkillSource Center wants to pilot it. The chapter would develop a training curriculum for it. The purpose of the Job Club is to help job seekers form stronger skills to aid them in their job search. The board agreed to support the concept.

The Virginia Disabilities Mentoring Day is October 15. We can advertise this in the newsletter. There is a Business Leadership Network, where business leaders share experiences in employing persons with disabilities. There is a Disability Friendly Business Recognition Seal for which businesses can be nominated who actively support the disabled.

Old Business:

Bernadette discussed the HR SIG/ Mentor-Protégé program. The SIG on recruiting went well. The SIG scheduled for May 28th has a facilitator but no topic yet. Bernadette would like to have the calendar filled for 2003 with facilitators and topics. The original purpose of the group was for HR professionals to meet and discuss how to advance their careers. Rich thinks the group would have to be self-directed; the board shouldn’t tell them what topics they need to act on. Also, all people interested in participating in a SIG may not want to be part of a mentor-protégé program. It was decided that the group should be problem-oriented. Members need to be asked to identify issues and problems, then build meetings around that. Judy suggested that Bernadette distribute a flyer at the next chapter meeting asking for SIG topics, issues, and problems.

New Business:

The next Chapter Discussion Group meets on May 1st to discuss “Using Client Feedback to Improve HR Performance.” It will be facilitated by HumanR. The last meeting on “Emergency Preparedness” went well and was well attended.

We discussed the July meeting. Judy proposed a morning meeting at the Tower Club in Tysons Corner. Ardell Fleeson has agreed to speak. If we are not committed yet to meet in July at the Marriott, the meeting will be held at the Tower Club.

We have agreed to help sponsor the National Council on the Aging, and will invite a representative to speak at a chapter meeting.

Mary Lynn Billetteri, our new Legislative Liaison, mentioned that the SHRM web site encourages people to send letters to Congress on HR topics. Most of the work is done for members, so interested members should check the web site.

The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
