Agenda:

The July 2004 Board meeting minutes were approved.

Membership Report

We have 177 paid memberships and 23 applications pending payment. Bonnie is working with SHRM National to verify national memberships of some of our members. It was decided we should contact non-members via e-mail and given them a chance to “provide a defense.” Bonnie will hold the directory until September, telling those who haven’t paid yet that they cannot be included in the directory unless payment is received by September 1st.

Communications Report

We could purchase a new database feature that would extract data from registration forms and input it to a database. The cost is approximately $600. The Board will discuss this in September.

Treasurers Report

Our checkbook balance as of August 2nd was $18,220.79. We have obtained our new tax ID number.

Legislative Liaison Report

The FLSA changes take effect August 23rd. Mary Lynn will get information to Nancy for the newsletter. Changes to FMLA & COBRA are in process.

Diversity and Workforce Report

Evelyn asked if we wanted to continue with short presentations by community development speakers at the chapter meetings in 2005. Kurt suggested that we schedule them through Feb/Mar 2005 and put a question on the meeting evaluation form to determine if they are considered worthwhile.

Programs Report

Amy reported that COBRA regulations will be the topic of the November meeting. We still are in need of a sponsor. Cindy hasn’t yet signed the hotel contract for 2005. For breakfast meetings, the menu will include breakfast sandwiches and fruit. Buffets are too time consuming. Cindy advised the hotel which entrees we do not wish to have at our meetings in 2005.

Certification

The certification study group extends from September 8th thru December 1st. Meetings will be held Wednesdays from 5:45-8pm at National Louis University in McLean. Eileen Taylor will again facilitate. Ten have signed up thus far as being interested. August 13 is the deadline for sign-up. NOVA SHRM is advertising our study group to its members, also.

The cost for attending the study group sessions in 2003 was $725. Similar programs charge over $1,000. Maggie recommends this year that we charge $700 for Dulles and NOVA SHRM members, and National Louis University students; $750 for members of National SHRM only; and $800 if they are members of neither National nor the Dulles or NOVA chapters. It was further recommended that we only charge $150 if the participant already has the SHRM Learning System.

Old Business:

Amy addressed the issue of chapter discussion groups. She said the format has changed. It was started as a genuine discussion group, while the most recent one was a formal presentation with handouts and more recertification credits than we get for chapter meetings. These sessions may be taking revenue and attendance away from our chapter meetings. There appears to be topic competition, too. Mary mentioned that when she led a discussion group, she felt she needed to bring materials and be prepared to act as a speaker if attendees did not readily participate in a discussion of the topic. Bonnie suggested that the facilitator come with questions to stimulate conversation. Kurt suggested that we need someone to manage the groups and direct their focus more toward discussion, and also to be alert for topic duplication. It was agreed that we will not have discussion groups during months when we have a morning chapter meeting. Another suggestion is that questions for consideration be issued prior to a meeting of the discussion group.

Kurt distributed the draft By Laws developed by himself, Amy, Maggie and Don Nagley. Kurt outlined the changes made to the prior version of the By Laws. The By Laws will be voted on at the September chapter meeting.

Lisa will distribute the 2005 Board Nominations flyer at the August meeting.

New Business:

None

The September Dulles SHRM Board Meeting will be held at AOL on Monday, September 13th at 6 pm.
