December, 2000 Transition Board Meeting

Review of 2000 - what was good:

  • Service project - Reston shelter: Emery Rucker’s Homeless Shelter
  • Eileen Taylor’s certification class
  • Facilitation of meetings
  • Speakers were good - varied the sessions each time
  • Launch of web site
  • Good sponsors
  • Adding door prizes
  • Holiday party
  • Membership/meeting attendance
  • Networking - open positions - web openings
  • Email membership notification

Opportunities for improvement in 2001:

  • Newsletter - input from others - response
    • Lynn will handle as a monthly letter for the time being
  • People we don’t recognize - greeting them at networking
    • Board members to spread out and sit at different tables - also make a special effort to speak to people
  • Written thank you to speakers and sponsors
    • Emily will make sure this happens - need to have the info to do so
    • Need to have a SHRM gift for them - Lynn will order
  • Speaker guidelines/rules/suggestions - Karen will develop these
    • Need to know AV needs, number of attendees, ask for handouts
    • Speakers should not sell from the podium
    • Someone should ideally see the program before
    • Invite new President in October - there is also a new Area II manager
    • Explore having another book signing - “The DNA of Leadership”
    • 1 to 2 attorneys a year are enough
    • Explore possibility of a non-HR person to talk
    • Future of HR
    • HR Technologies - Deborah Vess from AOL?
    • List from Kathleen
    • Elder care - panel
    • HR Competencies - raising the bar for the profession
  • Seminar - joint meeting with Leesburg or NOVA?
  • Mentoring program - ask for volunteers
    • Information about going back for a degree - ask area universities to have a table
    • In lieu of a lending library - we could have a list of resources
  • Institute a scholarship program - Nancy will look into this
  • Need to redo information on the chapter on the website and the printed brochure - Don will revise it for us
  • Recertification assistance - need someone to head this up
  • Chapter will provide assistance in the certification of one-stop shops for the Workforce Investment Act - Don to coordinate the volunteers
  • Fund raising for the foundation
    • Start with a monthly 50-50 raffle
  • More legislative information and involvement
    • Need to have an update on a monthly meeting

The Board voted to:

  • The vision statement developed during 2000 was still valid for 2001.
  • Donate $250 to the SHRM Foundation for 2000.

Maxine will create a draft copy of the Chapter Activity Plan Checklist for us to review and provide additional information.
