Agenda:

The October 2004 Board meeting minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report

Amy moved and Judy P. seconded a motion to accept the November 2004 Board meeting minutes; the motion was unanimously carried.

Judy indicated that our balance was $19,906.

A gift to the SHRM Foundation had previously been approved in the amount of $350. During 2004, we collected $326 in the 50/50 drawings. Therefore Judy recommended that we increase our donation to $400.

Kurt asked that Board members familiarize themselves with the budget for continued discussion at the January meeting.

SHRM Leadership Conference

Kurt, Cindy & Maggie attended the Conference. They attended many breakout sessions for medium- sized chapters (100-300 members) where they learned about best practices. Much of the conference details will be posted on SHRM's Volunteer Leadership Resource Center.

Some of the topics discussed included:

At Large Initiative: Currently 2/3 of the national members are at-large. (Bonnie has done a super job of working with national to straighten records of who is actually affiliated with Dulles.) It is recommended that we take advantage of SHRM's mailing labels to unaffiliated folks, but keep a watchful eye on the zip codes they think are close.

Senior HR leader needs: There is a push to attract and address their needs. We discussed whether there is a need for our chapter to focus on them. What is a senior leader? Maggie mentioned that NOVA did a survey of folks that were members in name only (never attended meetings). They said that the topics were too tactical and not strategic enough. They held a special "executive series" and found that many more of these senior members attended. Some suggestions included M&As, what CEO's wanted, business trends - topics with a strategic (vs. tactical) focus. The suggestion is not for a special sub-group, but rather for doing special programs and perhaps partnering with another chapter or organization.

National SHRM announced that there will be no dues increase in 2005

2005 Objectives

Kurt outlined 2005 objectives for consideration by the Broad while stressing that this is a work in progress.

We discussed:

  • The objective to grow membership by 15% over year end 2004. This equate to approximately 30 new members.
  • Being a resource for small companies, perhaps even those without a formal HR department.
  • Community outreach -- shortening, giving folks a template to follow, stressing links in our website, article in newsletter, handouts over length of talk.
  • Dulles Chapter business cards -- can be individually printed or all Board names all on one card.
  • Repeat of membership survey conducted by HumanR.
  • Retention rate year to year.
  • Another trip to Capitol Hill & SHRM.
  • Increasing recognition for Board & membership.

During the next meeting, we'll be discussing the Question of the Month and networking/connections.

Next Meeting:

The next regular Board Meeting will be at the The MITRE Corp, Building 2, 7515 Colshire Drive, McLean at 6:00 pm on Monday, January 10.
