PRESIDENTS' REPORTS
Kurt Cowles reviewed 2005 goals and accomplishments, including:
  • 25% membership growth 2005 over 2004
  • maintenance of fiscal soundness
  • increasing ties with National SHRM
  • Day Inside the Beltway
  • certification group
  • continuing to offer excellent programs and sponsors
  • recognition of Board and membership (including gift of imprinted bags to Board)
Maggie Chan announced the theme for 2006 - "Chapter of Choice". We discussed what that means to us, how to brand ourselves, and how to tie goals for the chapter as a whole as well as each Board function to that theme. We currently have 261 members and discussed continued growth as it relates to our reputation as a "small and intimate" chapter. We touched on building relationships versus simply being friendly and number of members versus level of engagement (meeting attendance, etc.). We also talked about creating sub-groups (compensation, etc.) that perhaps might meet quarterly (akin to NOVA's SIGs) and our use of technology.

Programs
Our 2006 speaker calendar is completed, and the Programs Committee will soon start to look at 2007. In the meantime, the main focus is on sponsors. The Committee will be focusing on evaluating our sponsorship package for competitiveness and ROI for sponsors, because it has become increasingly difficult to attract sponsors to the Chapter. The plan is to look outside the box to solicit sponsors, and perhaps create less expensive sponsorship options for non-profits and consultants. (A related topic will be other ways to advertise our meetings to new audiences.)

Workforce Diversity
Evelyn Kaiser referred to her theme as "empowering the 21st century workforce". This theme has 3 sub-parts to it: develop responsiveness among members on employment opportunities for persons with disabilities; work with High School students on topics of ethics and impact on future career choices; and increase volunteerism of members by matching them with community organizations. In addition, she will be working with Maggie Chan to "package" information on our continuing efforts in this area for the Pinnacle Award.

Student Chapter Liaison
Nidhi Kanungo spoke of increasing student membership. She also discussed a variety of programs that may increase student interest such as mentoring, job shadowing, mini-job fairs, etc.

Membership
The main focus of the Membership Committee will be on retention. This will also include outreach (by ambassadors?) to non-attending members to help re-engage them. In addition, they will target membership growth to specific populations such as (graduating) students, individuals new to HR, individuals new to the area, etc. There was talk of better metrics (creation/use) as well as "membership services" such as tracking recertification credits earned, etc.

SIG/Discussion Groups
The SIG Committee is planning ten meetings in 2006. They hope to present just-in-time topics that will continue to be facilitator-led. They also want to do a better job of outreach between SIG attendees and regular Chapter members (in collaboration with Membership). A sub-theme will be "assisting the one-person HR Department".

Certification
While Chas Sumser hasn't developed specific goals yet, he hopes to create synergies between the SIG, Student Liaison and the like. He also wants to promote our course as the "choice" certification class.

Registration
Kimberly Esch hopes to use our new database capabilities to increase the professionalism of the function. Specifics include pre-printed nametags with name and company as well as a list of meeting attendees (for check-in and possibly for distribution to attendees and/or sponsors).

Treasurer
Sarah Cower's main focus will be maintaining the Chapter's financial health. She hopes to reduce the number of no-shows (and increase the collection of payments due) for meetings. She is also researching joint billing for Chapter dues (along with National SHRM dues).

Secretary
Amy Lourenco hopes to provide assistance and resources to other functional areas as needed.

Communications
Denise Henderson's first goal focuses on the website - making it a "one-stop shop". Finishing up with John & Jeff to go-live on December 20th and then transitioning the webmaster duties to Andrew Morris will be her first tasks. She hopes to partner with other functional areas like Legislative for content and Programs/Sponsors for cross-promotion of the site. She'd like to increase the number of hits to our site versus National's. Denise Henderson's second goal involves expanding the newsletter. She'd like to build on our format by adding articles (for instance, about a member's experience when they volunteered with a community organization -- and she's willing to interview the person & then write the article), job postings, and/or ads from sponsors. Finally, she'll be exploring the automatic mailing of the newsletter to folks who wish that. She respectfully requests that all Board members submit information timely, both for the website and the newsletter.

Miscellaneous
  • The calendar of meeting dates was distributed. There were a few corrections, and the REVISED schedule is attached.
  • In-person attendance at Board meetings is encouraged; however, the call-in number will be available for those who can't make it. Thanks to Denise Henderson and ARTEL for hosting.
  • There will be a rotating agenda at each Board meeting to allow for more in-depth discussion of a few functions each month. January's focus will be on Programs/Sponsors and Student Liaison.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:16 pm.
