5. Manage and measure

Congratulations to Dulles SHRM
for Being Awarded the Superior Merit Award!
National SHRM announced that Dulles SHRM received the Superior Merit Award status for 2005. Our chapter had completed and submitted the 2006 Chapter Achievement Plan (CAP) in January 2006. Each year, chapters have to submit the CAP to provide National SHRM with the chapter’s accomplishments for the year before. Each accomplishment counted as 1 point on the checklist. Medium-size chapters (101-300 members) such as ours receive the Superior Merit Award for scoring over 70 points out of 100 (Merit Award for scoring 60 points). Bonus points are also awarded for extra activities. Congratulations to Maggie Chan and the amazing 2006 Dulles SHRM Board on scoring 131 points.

Dulles SHRM Member Survey Results
Contributed by Mary Saily, President
Thanks to all of you who participated in our recent member survey. The Dulles SHRM Board was pleased that 33% of our members took the time to respond (20% to 25% is typical for member surveys).
What We Learned
Responses show high levels of satisfaction with our programs and activities (ratings were on a 5-point scale; 5 = very satisfied). All items on the 2007 Member Survey scored 4.0 or above (Satisfied) as shown in the table below.

4.3 |
Monthly morning discussion groups |
4.0 |
Job/Resume posting |
4.1 |

Of these services, Learning through our monthly program speakers was rated the highest in importance at 4.5; Networking was a close second at 4.4. To help us plan future programs, the survey included a list of topics organized by category. Those with the highest levels of interest are listed below, along with the top-rated sub-categories.
- Employee Relations/Morale (66) – ways to retain employees in the D.C. market; merging corporate cultures after an acquisition; ways to improve employee morale.
- Compensation (49) – current trends/market analysis; rewards & recognition programs; salaries for high-demand skills or experience.
- Performance Management/Individual Development (44) – trends/best practices; succession planning; coaching for improvement.
- Legal Issues (30) – employment law (hiring/termination).
- Benefits (29) – creative approaches to benefits; developments in health insurance.
- Training and Development (29) – leadership training.
- General HR (24) - measuring HR effectiveness; positioning HR as an effective business partner.
We also asked for comments and suggestions, and members suggested a variety of program and networking ideas. An overall theme is the need to continually reevaluate our meeting structure, networking opportunities, and program options as the Chapter continues to grow.
Actions Being Taken
The Board is using the survey data to plan our 2008 programs and to provide guidance to speakers who are already scheduled for the rest of 2007. We will also be experimenting with ways to improve our monthly meetings to ensure quality time for both networking and learning – e.g., introducing more structured ways to network.
In addition to the survey, we use information from the evaluations completed at the end of each meeting to plan our programs. Thanks to all of you who are providing feedback - be assured, we're listening!

Ever Wonder How We Select Speakers for the Monthly Meetings?
Contributed by Judy Carter, Vice President, Programs
Have you enjoyed the speakers and their presentations so far this year? Have you learned something that will be helpful to you in doing your job? Do you wonder how we select them? Most of our speakers are scheduled several months in advance, some of them up to a year. We begin the process with your responses to the member survey each spring. One of the questions asks what your HR topics of interest are and this where we get our HR topics for the year. The Dulles Board reviews the results, and then the VP of Programs starts to work on finding speakers who can do presentations on the HR topics you identified as being of most interest to you.
A primary focus is on speakers who are willing to present at no cost to the chapter. The chapter does not pay for speakers, and we request that they not market themselves or their firms at the meeting. Another focus is on speakers and presentations that can be pre-approved by HRCI for recertification credits for the attendees.
To obtain this pre-approval, the presentation must be tied to the HR body of knowledge. The biography of the speaker and a summary of the presentation are submitted to HRCI in advance of the meeting. In most cases, the recertification credit is approved, and we provide a certificate for attendees. Our goal is to have as many as possible of our programs pre-approved. However, occasionally, we may present a program that we believe will be of particular interest to our members, but that does not get HRCI credit.
So just where do the speakers come from? They come from many sources – suggestions from Board members and from chapter members and references from other HR professionals who have heard an engaging speaker. We also get many requests from unsolicited “volunteer” speakers who wish to present to our group. They may contact us through our website or through a member of the chapter. Whatever the source, the Board must approve each speaker. In addition to the scheduled speakers, we also try to have reserve speakers available as back-ups, if needed.
If you’ve heard a speaker recently who truly captivated you and that you would like to recommend, please let us know. We’re always on the lookout for engaging speakers. Or if you wish to volunteer as a back-up speaker, please let us know that, too. Contact Judy Carter, VP of Programs, at Judy.Carter@cox.net.

Call for Volunteers

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) have agreed to work together to promote the employment of people with disabilities. The Dulles SHRM Board of Directors has agreed to support this initiative to promote career opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Many local companies face stiff competition when it comes to hiring skilled, ready to work employees. Companies are also striving for workforce diversity. People with disabilities are the largest untapped diversified recruiting resource for employers.
If you are interested in participating on a steering committee to develop strategies for Dulles SHRM members to promote the hiring of individuals with disabilities, please contact Evelyn Kaiser, Director of Diversity, Education and Workforce, Dulles SHRM at 703-277-3511 or mailto:Evelyn.Kaiser@drs.virginia.gov.
Workforce Recruitment Program
Contributed by Evelyn Kaiser, Diversity/Workforce Education Director
Attention Employers! The 2007 Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) is ready to help you fill your summer or permanent hiring needs with talented college students with disabilities. The WRP database contains profiles of student job candidates from more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide, representing all majors, and ranging from college freshmen to graduate students and law students. Coordinated by the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and the U.S. Department of Defense, the WRP is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private sector employers with highly motivated postsecondary students with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs. Annually, trained recruiters from WRP's federal agency partners conduct personal interviews with more than 1,500 students with disabilities at college and university campuses across the nation, and develop a database listing the qualifications of each student. This searchable database is available to federal Human Resource Specialists, Equal Opportunity Employment Specialists, and other hiring officials in federal agencies at the WRP federal website (http://wrp.gov). Employers in the private and non-profit sectors can gain access to the WRP's pool of candidates through the Employer Assistance and Recruiting Network (EARN) (www.earnworks.com/wrp), a free service of ODEP. College career counselors or disability student services providers who would like to schedule a recruitment trip to their campuses in 2008 can see the Information Brochure below or contact wrp@dol.gov. Students interested in the program must work through their colleges. Due to limited staff resources, the Office of Disability Employment Policy cannot respond to direct student inquiries.
