Membership Dues Now Due

It’s that time of the year. No, I’m not talking about the beginning of spring (although I will admit that’s a great thought) - this is a not so gentle reminder that if you have not already done so, you need to pay your Dulles SHRM dues for this calendar year are now due (unless you joined the chapter during Oct - Dec, 2000).

This is the best investment you will make as a HR professional! You get reduced rates at monthly meetings, certification study groups, and other Dulles Chapter events; reduced rates at HR Alliance and other local SHRM chapter seminars and events; a listing in the Dulles Chapter directory (and a copy for great networking possibilities); and the many other advantages of affiliating with the Dulles Chapter.

For as little as $25.00 a year for National SHRM members, $40.00 for Friends of the Chapter, all of this is available to you. Send your dues to our Treasurer today!

Dulles SHRM Discussion Groups

The HR discussion groups are a definite hit! What better way to share some best practices with your fellow HR professionals - better than learning the hard way! Here’s the upcoming schedule - plan on visiting one or all to learn or share your experiences…

The next one will be human resources shared service centers on May 4th from 7:30 am to 9:30 am at Lafarge in Herndon. Lafarge is looking at the concept and would love participation from experienced entities, or folks who are currently looking at the concept themselves. Contact Cindy at Cindy.Loison@lafargecorp.com or (703) 480-3706 to confirm your attendance and get directions.

Looking ahead, the next discussion groups will include:

  • Knowledge Management, at Lafarge, hosted by Micheline Malosh, June (TBA)
  • Organizational Culture, at Lafarge, hosted by Fran O'Neal, July (TBA)
  • Immigration/Expatriation, at Lafarge, hosted by Mary Mendoza, Sept (TBA)
And still to come…
  • Instilling Pride in Employees
  • Diversity
  • Vendors
  • HRIS Systems
  • Recruiting Management Systems

Diversity Quiz

Since this concept has been around for a long time, let’s see how much we really know about diversity. Respond to each question, then review the accuracy of your responses against the answers listed at the end of this newsletter

  1. By the year 2050, what percent of the total U.S. population will Asians, Hispanics, Blacks, and other nonwhite groups represent?
  2. Of the 43 million people in the U.S. who have disabilities, how many are of working age (16-64)? How many are unemployed? How many who are unemployed want to work?
  3. Workers over 50 years of age will make up what percent of the U.S. work force by the year 2005?
  4. What percent of the total U.S. population speaks a language other than English at home? What percent of those speak Spanish?
  5. Of the 8.7 million immigrants who arrived in the U.S. between 1980 and 1990, what percent have college degrees? What percent of U.S. natives have colleges degrees?
  6. According to a poll taken by Newsweek in September 1992, what percent of the people in U.S. believe gays and lesbians should be given equal rights and opportunities in the workplace?
  7. What percent of the U.S. working-age women are in the labor market?
  8. In the U.S. what percent of male executives under age 40 are fathers? What percent of female executives under age 40 are mothers?
  9. In 1970, 40.3 percent of U.S. households were comprised of married couples with children under 18? What was the percent in 1992?
  10. What are the two most racially and ethnically diverse states in the U.S. The two least?

Update From The SHRM 18th Annual Employment Law and Legislative Conference

by Maxine Trentham, Past President

Many thanks to Maxine for the terrific report (Click Here to View the Report) from the SHRM Legislative Conference. Most former Presidents (Clinton excluded) quickly fade into the background - glad to relinquish their duties to someone else. But not our Maxine! She has been just as involved with our chapter this year as in the past - and we are so lucky to have her!

Maxine, in addition to her continuing support with programs and sponsors, not only represented us at the Legislative Conference but took the time to write this report so that we can all learn from her experience. Thanks Maxine - you’re the best!

Board Meeting Minutes

Starting this month we will be posting the minutes from Board meetings on our web site - please take a few minutes to review them in full. Click Here to View.

Sponsors, we still need sponsors…

The benefits of sponsoring a Dulles SHRM meeting include:

  1. Direct contact at the meeting with anywhere from 30-60 chapter members.
  2. Exposure on the Dulles SHRM website with a mention about being the sponsor, a brief description of what the company does and a link to the company's website.
  3. Table set up next to the registration table during the reception/networking time prior to the meeting.
  4. A mention in the meeting flyer about the company with their website address.
  5. An introduction at the meeting with an opportunity to briefly overview the company’s products or services.

If your company is interested in sponsoring a meeting, or better yet know of someone who might be, please contact Karen Uhlir at karenuhlir@msn.com and help keep the cost of meetings low.

Dulles Chapter of SHRM in the NEWS yet again!!!

Check out page 30 of the April, 2001 issue of HR News, where we are listed as one of the chapter’s in the Vice President’s Circle for our donation last year to the SHRM Foundation

With our 50/50 raffle this year our goal is to increase our giving so that we can be in the President’s Circle this year ($500 or more)!

HR Career Expo and Job Fairs Scam

Be on the alert! It seems the HR Community is being targeted in a scam. Criminals are using legitimate Career Expo's (specifically the upcoming one in NYC scheduled for April 24, 2001 at Madison Square Garden) and solicit fees for booth space at the event.

It appears that they are portraying themselves as representatives of legitimate upcoming events. They fax (or e-mail) material for these events and ask you to send your remittal check (registration fees are $1895) to their attention (even offering a 10% discount for early registration). Unfortunately, the checks are cashed and if you go to the event, you will have no booth and be out all of your money!

The scam uses one telephone number for both voice calls and fax's. They have also used a cell phone number and website. Anyone wishing further details or with any questions, can call Bill Sharp at 212 425-1520 or e-mail at NYPI@aol.com

Mark Your Calendars

OK - I admit it - I can’t read a calendar to save my life! In the last newsletter I listed the wrong dates for the Virginia SHRM Conference. The real dates are Monday and Tuesday, September 24 and 25. So, if you already marked your calendar - good for you, just make a minor modification, and if you haven’t - it’s safe (I think) to mark it now!

Patton Boggs and SHRM are jointly sponsoring an Investigations Seminar on Wednesday, May 23rd from 8 am to 4 pm at the Fairview Park Marriott. The cost is $460. The program overview includes stories of actual cases, role play by participants in questioning witnesses and performing other investigative tasks, plain English discussions of legal concepts, and a multi-part case study. Each participant will receive a CD-ROM accompaniment to the course materials. The course is approved for .6 continuing education credits toward recertification. See www.pattonboggs.com for further information.
