Chapter Discussion Group:
“I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification”

Thursday, September 4

Join us on Thursday, September 4 for a roundtable discussion on I-9 employment eligibility verification. Our facilitator will be Priscilla Muhlenkamp, an Associate with the Washington, D.C. office of Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, a national firm practicing exclusively in the area of global immigration and nationality law for the corporate sector. Priscilla specializes in U.S. immigration matters and regulatory compliance and frequently lectures on business immigration topics including Labor Condition Application Compliance, Employer Sanctions, and Form I-9 Compliance.

In preparation, please reflect on the following questions:

  • What policies does your company have in place with regard to employment eligibility verification/reverification and the placement/continuance of employees on payroll?
  • Who has ownership of the I-9 employment eligibility verification?
  • How are you handling offsite employees?
  • What methods are you using to ensure that documents are kept for the requisite period and that reverification is accomplished on time?
  • Why should I-9s be part of your due diligence for purposes of mergers and acquisitions?

You are invited to bring examples from your experience, or, if you have had no previous experience in this area, consider this an opportunity to learn from your colleagues. Contact Cindy Loison (cloisonhr@aol.com) to reserve your space.

Date: Thursday, September 4
Time: 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
Place: Spherion, 1750 Tysons Boulevard, Suite 260, McLean, VA 22102
Phone: (703) 9176-1105 (Teresa Buchholz direct line)

Directions:
From the Toll Road (Route 267): Exit the Toll Road at Route 123 South to Tysons Boulevard. Make a right onto Tysons Boulevard. [Beware - the two far right lanes after you turn are right-turn only - you need to go straight once on Tysons Boulevard.] You will pass a pink parking garage on your left and come upon three tall buildings (Deloitte & Touche, Ritz, and Tysons II). Turn left (in front of the sign for the Ritz Carlton) and follow the circle around to the parking garage with the number 1750. Park in this garage on Level 3 in an unmarked space.

Book report #4

WHY THE BOTTOM LINE ISN’T
By Dave Ulrich and Norm Smallwood

HR people have always known that there is more to the “value” of an organization than what appears on the balance sheet in the annual report. Things like investor confidence in leadership, employees, and culture all contribute to the overall value of an organization. These things are measured and accounted for in very different ways than the hard assets of the company. Ulrich and Smallwood make a strong case for the value of these intangibles. The intangibles Ulrich and Smallwood discuss are almost all within the realm of the HR professional. The book provides a roadmap for HR professionals to follow as they demonstrate how their work and profession adds value to the bottom-line value of the organization. As the authors say in the preface:

“We should also note that our work lays out where human resource professional can and should focus their attention. With an increasing scrutiny of ideas and programs, HR professionals must ensure that their work adds value. They can do so when their concepts, tools, and advice help build or protect market value. [For example] the outcome of leadership training is not just happy leaders, leaders with more skills, or leaders able to implement products through action learning, but also leaders who build confidence in customers and investors and who deliver more shareholder value as a result.”

I read the book in one sitting and have referred to it regularly since then. Why the Bottom Line Isn’t is available from the SHRM bookstore ($23.95) (shrmstore.shrm.org).

(Submitted by Doug Turner, August 2003)

Note: We invite book reports from members on specialty or general interest publications related to the Human Resources field. Submissions are published in the monthly newsletter and posted on the Chapter website.

Embry Rucker Shelter Donations

Several years ago, the Dulles SHRM Board, under leadership of Chapter President Maxine Trentham, realized that the chapter should become more involved in the local community. In response, the Board voted to “adopt” the Embry Rucker Shelter located in Reston next to the main Reston Library. Since then, the Chapter has collected donations for the shelter at each monthly meeting. Donations have ranged from baby products to shampoo and conditioner to toys during the holiday period. Valued at several hundred dollars over the years, our donations have made a real difference in the lives of the region’s homeless population, especially families with small children.

We continue to collect donations at each monthly meeting but realize that many of you are busy and may forget to bring an item for the collection basket. In the interest of accommodating our hectic lifestyles, the current Board recently decided to “pass the hat” at future meetings to accommodate members who may wish to make a cash donation. Cash donations will be used to purchase “desperately needed” items on the Shelter’s “wish list” to include diapers, baby formula, linens, toiletries, and small denomination gift certificates at local grocery stores, Target, Payless Shoes, and beauty salons. Our goal is to collect a minimum $1 from each meeting attendee, or approximately $600 annually. And, in the future, we will let you know how much we collect and what we are able to purchase with your donations.

Certified Business Manager (CBM) Certification

The Certified Business Manager (CBM) is to a business manager as the CPA is to an accountant, as the PE is to an engineer, and as the SPHR/PHR is to a human resource professional. The CBM is beneficial to any business professional since it is the most comprehensive general business management certification available. The first step toward earning the CBM is to become a member of APBM, the Association of Professionals in Business Management.

Benefits of membership include discounts on products and services, networking opportunities, access to APBM’s members only website, subscription to the bi-monthly newsletter, and opportunities to participate in surveys to track business trends and current issues in business management.
