To PHR or not to PHR?

Dulles SHRM makes this an easy question!

Been thinking about getting your PHR or SHPR designation? Smart decision! And have we got news for you! Dulles SHRM will again be hosting a study group this fall just in time to get you prepped and ready for the December exam!

I am so pleased that Eileen Taylor has again agreed to teach the class. Having seen her in action I can tell you she’s terrific! The group will begin meeting on Monday, September 24 and will run through Monday, November 26, with options for a review session closer to the exam date. As mentioned last month, thanks to Emily Dunn who will be hosting the study group, it will meet at Teleglobe in Reston (11480 Commerce Park Drive).

Cost will be $200 for a Dulles Chapter member, $250 for a member of another chapter/National SHRM member and $300 for all others. So comes and bring your colleagues - you won’t get a more cost effective review.

How can you sign up? Contact Judy Perrault via email at vprez@mindbank.com or by phone at 703-893-4700 no later than September 7th.

Please remember that you also need to register with the HRCI to take the exam. The deadline for the December exam is September 21, 2001. Visit the website at http://www.hrci.org for full information.

But what if I already have my PHR/SPHR?

Fear not, SHRM has something for you too!

One of the important aspects of certification is that folks who pass the certification test have to re-certify every 3 years. This can be accomplished by re-testing (groan!) or by demonstrating that you have met the requirements of 60 recertification hours over a 3-year period. Taking advantage of educational opportunities can contribute to some or all of these 60 hours.

SHRM is proud to announce "online delivery" of SHRM’s "best" concurrent sessions from several recent conferences. Now you can experience SHRM education in the privacy of your own home or office. These presentations have been adapted to an online environment, featuring audio, power point presentations and a five to eight question postsession quiz that will enable you to earn recertification credit from the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

Visit the website at: www.shrm.org/recertify for more information!

Questions, we need questions…

Jami Dittmeier needs your help!

Jami’s put together a totally awesome program for us in August: “Recruiting Nutz & Boltz: New Dimensions for a New Decade,” which is a world-class panel consisting of Gerry Crispin, Gary Cluff and Barbara Mitchell! Not only will you want to come, but you will also want to invite your friends from work and other HR/Recruiting colleagues.

Now, here’s where we need you! Jami would like you to send her your questions for the panel. What are the recruiting issues, problems, trends, etc. that you would like to know more about? Please email your questions to Jami at jamid@erols.com and help us make this as timely and topical a session as possible!

Please note: Due to the additional costs that we will incur, the pricing and timing for this 2-hour “workshop” are a bit different. The cost for Dulles SHRM members will be the same as always, $30.00. The cost for a non-member who is a member of National SHRM or another chapter is $40.00, and the cost for non-SHRM members is $50.00. (Still a real bargain!)

The format will also be a bit different, with a buffet style dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 and the panel presentation from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Dulles SHRM Discussion Groups

Nothing stays the same except change! I don’t know how things are in your life, but that comment couldn’t be truer these days. The next HR discussion group will be on Organizational Culture and Change, and will be facilitated by Fran O'Neal on July 10th from 7:30 to 9:30 am at Lafarge (our ongoing thanks to Cindy Loision for hosting these sessions).

Anyone with an interest in the impact of organizational culture, or with insights on the subject, is encouraged to attend the meeting to share your experiences and practices. If you are interested in attending and learning more, please contact Fran at FONARG@aol.com.

Looking ahead, the next discussion group will be in September (we’re taking a vacation in August!) Plan on exploring the topic of Immigration/Expatriation, at Lafarge, hosted by Mary Mendoza.

And still to come…

  • Instilling Pride in Employees
  • Diversity
  • Vendors
  • HRIS Systems
  • Recruiting Management Systems

Board Meeting Minutes

Starting this month we will be posting the minutes from Board meetings on our web site - please take a few minutes to review them in full. Click Here to View.

Legislative Update

Jason M. Branciforte, Legislative Liaison
Littler Mendelson, P.C.

There has been a recent significant development in the employment law field that should provide the basis for some interesting discussions in the future.

On May 29, 2001, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its much-anticipated decision in Case martin v. PGA Tour, Inc., that disabled professional golfer Casey Martin must be allowed to use a cart on the PGA Tour.

What significance does this have for employers? Perhaps the most significant aspect of the martin case is an apparent signal from the Supreme Court that courts may actively review an employer’s contentions and decisions where issues respecting disability exist. In the Martin case, it would have been legally defensible for the Court to simply defer to the PGA Tour and its decision regarding an accommodation for Martin. By not doing so, employers should expect that other courts will not defer to them when reviewing an employee’s request for an accommodation.

Employers, therefore, should: (1) review job descriptions that set forth essential functions; (2) train and assign managers to review and analyze claims of disability with consideration for what would be a reasonable accommodation; (3) when a request for accommodation is made, engage in an individualized interactive process to determine if there is a reasonable accommodation that can be implemented; and (4) be especially careful in testing applicants so that a test does not improperly, adversely, exclude persons with a disability.

With this in mind, keep your head down, your arm straight, and follow through to your target!

Dulles Chapter of SHRM in the News...

We’re at it again! The Dulles Chapter has a mention in the June 2001 edition of HR News, under “Chapter Chatter.”

“The Dulles, VA Chapter has added two service projects to their chapter activities. New this year is a SHRM Foundation 50/50 drawing at chapter meetings: members purchase a ticket for $1, the winner of the drawing gets 50% of the "pot" and the other 50% goes to the SHRM Foundation. Fun for chapter members and a great way to raise money for the SHRM Foundation! In addition, at each monthly meeting members donate personal care and/or food items which are delivered to the Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter in Reston, VA.”

Virginia SHRM State Conference

If you didn’t already have enough great reasons to attend the VA State Conference on September 23, 24, and 25 in Norfolk VA, let me give you one more… our own Fran O’Neil has been accepted as a presenter for the event!

Fran’s topic will be: “Coaching is Every Leader's Job: A "How to" Process for Exceptional Performance Improvement” Coaching to achieve performance improvement is receiving significant attention. However, many leaders have not realized its amazing potential because they are uncertain about the process of coaching. This workshop will provide a field tested and practical view of specific steps that occur when coaching leads to performance improvement. The steps, their order, and how they are put into practice are critical to realizing the potential that coaching can provide.

Mark you calendar, palm pilot or the back of your hand and plan on attending this great event!
