Join Us On July 16 for "How To Work a Crowd" Breakfast Meeting

Join us in July for a first ever Dulles SHRM breakfast meeting and a very unique topic, “How to Work a Crowd” with Ardell Fleeson, Membership Director of The Tower Club. Called by The Washington Post “the business matchmaker” with a “golden rolodex,” Ardell will conduct an interactive workshop on business networking. You will learn:

  • How to know whom you are looking for at a networking event
  • Tips on how to maximize business networking events including:
    • How to break into a conversation group
    • The skill of eye contact
    • How to present your business card
    • Food and drink guidelines
    • How to extract yourself from a bad conversation
  • The importance of systematic networking as part of your greater marketing plan

Ardell is herself very well networked in the Washington business community. Her quotes on technology trends, The Tower Club as an economic trends indicator, and other topics have appeared in The Washington Post. Ardell also conducts seminars for out-of-work technology employees in the Washington area.

Note that this breakfast meeting will begin with 7:15 a.m. registration followed by a breakfast buffet to begin at 8:00 a.m. and Ardell’s one-hour presentation from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Misti Mukherjee, Esq. of Odin, Feldman & Pittleman, a seasoned management-side employment attorney, will facilitate the discussion. In preparation, please reflect on the following questions:

  • What process is needed to ensure that documents are retained for the required time periods?
  • What documents should be retained in personnel files? What documents should never be kept in personnel files?
  • What is the best method for self-auditing compliance records?
  • What are some cost-effective methods of recordkeeping you have used?

You are invited to bring examples from your experience, or, if you have not had experience in this area, consider this an opportunity to learn from your colleagues.

Please confirm your attendance to Cindy Loison at cloisonhr@aol.com. We look forward to seeing you there.

Legislative Update
Submitted by Mary Lynn Billitteri, Chapter Legislative Liaison

Don’t forget to share your comments with the Department of Labor (DOL) on the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The DOL has issued proposed regulations that overhaul the FLSA’s 541 “white-collar” exemptions. There has been little change to the regulations over the past 50 years and they no longer reflect today’s work environment.

The DOL wants your comments. The deadline is June 30. It’s easy: Go to www.shrm.org/government and look for the headline, Fair Labor Standards Act. Then click on the link “please click here to submit comments to the DOL.” You may use the prepared comments or add your own edits.

SHRM is also encouraging more letter writing to your representatives in Congress. The same website (www.shrm.org/government) has a link for Write to Congress. Once you register (home address and ZIP code) all the information is provided for you to email your representatives. For more information, see the article below by Kurt Cowles.

Looking For Recertification Credits?
Submitted by Kurt Cowles, Chapter Certification Rep

Are you looking for additional ways to earn recertification credits? Are you also looking to get more involved in shaping legislation? Here’s how to accomplish both at the same time. HRCI will grant one credit hour for four letters sent to Congress over a one-year period, up to a maximum of three credit hours over three years. And writing to Congress is even easier when you’re a member of SHRM. Visit the SHRM website (www.shrm.org/government) and view the many templates created to assist with your letter-writing campaign.

Volunteer Needed For Nominating Committee

Each year, the Dulles Chapter forms a Nominating Committee to accept and consider self-nominations for the 19 positions on the following year’s Board of Directors. The Committee consists of the current Chapter President, the President-Elect, and a volunteer from the membership. Activities begin with a planning meeting held in August followed by solicitation of self-nominations during September and October, a ballot at the November dinner meeting, and induction of the new board at the December holiday party.

Last year, Director-at-Large Cornelia Gamlem volunteered to chair the Nominating Committee. This year, Cornelia will be mentoring the 2003 volunteer. We invite you to consider volunteering for this short-term, but important, position. Please contact President Judy Perrault (vprez@mindbank.com) if you are interested in helping out.

Book report #2
"Human Resources Management in the Knowledge Economy"

By Mark L. Lengnick-Hall and Cynthia A. Lengnick-Hall

The central theme of this book is that human resources must assume new roles to enable organizations to compete successfully in the knowledge economy. The thrust of the new roles is a more strategic focus on managing human capital and institutional knowledge and a shift in the HR paradigm from functions and processes to outcomes and accomplishments. The four roles are: human capital steward, knowledge facilitator, relationship builder, and rapid deployment specialist. The linking pin is a focus on people as a dominant source of competitive advantage.

The Lengnick-Halls are both professors at the University of Texas, San Antonio. So it is no surprise that the book reads much like a textbook and would be an ideal tool for any course that focuses on the future of our profession or on the strategic role of human resources. The authors provide good examples from progressive organizations (such as Southwest Airlines, Cisco, and Ritz-Carlton Hotels) and practical suggestions to show how the four roles operate in the real world. The book drags occasionally as the authors deviate from the main discussion to document references and to substantiate their research findings. The main theme is excellent, however, and provides a roadmap for the human resource professional who seeks fresh solutions for today’s new challenges. Human Resources Management in the Knowledge Economy is published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers and is available on-line from the SHRM bookstore. (Submitted by Nancy Streeter, May 2003)

Note: We invite book reports from members on specialty or general interest publications related to the Human Resources field. Submissions are published in the monthly newsletter and posted on the website.

Workplace Diversity/Workforce Development Key Components of an Integrated Business Strategy
Submitted by Dulles SHRM Assistant Diversity Director Evelyn Kaiser

What Is Diversity?

Most companies refer to it as a policy. An Equal Employment Opportunity Employer or Affirmative Action Plan may be in place. Externally it means attracting a global marketplace. Internally it means providing an environment for all employees where they are valued by and contributing to an organization regardless of race, gender, religious or cultural origins, age, physical or mental limitations, or more.

Diversity consciousness cannot be mandated. Rather it is cultivation of an environment that, by design, honors and capitalizes on these differences. It is reflective of an attitude that organizations and their staffs must adopt that allows them to change their basic concepts about workers and converts “them” into “us.”

What Is Workforce Development?

Workforce development means attracting and creating highly skilled workers by providing resources for training and job placement. In developing their workers, companies foster economic growth by linking the business community and educational sectors with the available workforce to develop activities associated with preparing individuals for their first job, for future jobs, and for changes in the work environment.

For example, your company can develop a business culture to:

  • Participate in mentoring, internships, and unpaid work experience programs
  • Identify training programs that are linked to the needs of businesses
  • Volunteer to design a “Job Ready” program for the SkillSource Center
  • Volunteer to facilitate small group discussions/workshops for job seekers
  • Volunteer to profile your company - teach workforce development professionals about your business industry
  • Volunteer to conduct mock interviews and provide personal development feedback to the participants
  • Participate with Economic Development of Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce Committees
  • Participate in Business Advisory Councils within the Public School System
  • Recruit from the SkillSource Center
  • Identify local talent

Know that, whatever approaches you choose, it will no doubt result in improved employee morale, business productivity, and market competitiveness.
