Join Us For An Exciting Program In June!
Traits, Customs, and Practices Found in the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America
By Scott Cawood, SPHR, Ph.D.

Scott is the Chief Learning Officer for the Great Place to Work Institute, the group responsible for selecting the “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” which appears annually in Fortune magazine. Scott works with companies across all industries trying to achieve the mission of the Great Place to Work Institute: “Building a better society by helping companies transform their workplaces.” The Institute has been studying organizations for over 20 years and has amassed an incredibly rich data set of best practices and strategies of the greatest companies to work for in America. At our June meeting, Scott will share lessons and best practices of the “100 Best” in order to motivate companies to become a great place to work.

Join us at our dinner meeting on Wednesday, June 19 to learn more about innovative business models and understanding cutting edge best practices. Formerly, Scott worked as a human resource leader in one of only 10 companies to have made the “100 Best” list each time since it began in 1984. He served the organization internationally in an organizational development role responsible for retention of key talent and the creation of a human resource program designed to capitalize human achievement and business growth. He also serves as faculty member in the MBA program at Drexel University and the University of Delaware. Scott holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration and Organizational Behavior. As a nationally recognized speaker, Scott’s goal is to motivate organizations to become great places to work through speaking, workshops, and organizational advising.

“Great out-of-the-box ideas and suggestions. Engaging and lively presentation!”

HR Career Development SIG Co-Chairperson Still Needed!

If you attended our dinner meeting in March, you’ll recall a suggestion from member Bernadette Gebhardt, Human Resources Manager at Martin’s Herend Imports, Inc., who requested that the Board consider a means of providing guidance to members on advancing their HR careers and addressing specific challenges, including advice on traditional and non-traditional HR career paths. Based on Bernadette’s suggestion, the Board decided at the April Board Meeting to form an HR Career Development SIG [special interest group], the first SIG for Dulles SHRM. The Charter is as follows:

The charter of the HR Career Development SIG is to support, advise, and mentor Dulles SHRM members in making decisions that advance their HR careers. Members who have pursued both traditional and non-traditional career paths provide general information as well as assistance in addressing specific challenges faced by individual group members. The group addresses such questions as “Where am I?” “What do I need to do to get ahead?” “What experience, degrees, certifications, and memberships will advance my career and enhance my employability?” The group is headed by an appointed chairperson, a position that rotates annually, and meets bimonthly. The core group consists of the chairperson and several senior HR professionals. Attendance is open to the membership and interested guests.

Please contact President Nancy Streeter (nabss@aol.com) if you would be interested in serving as the SIG’s first chairperson.

Diversity Recruitment For The New Millennium
10 Strategies For Improving Diversity Recruitment

Submitted by Deidre Iannelli, Dulles SHRM Diversity Director

It has been more than 30 years since the establishment of Affirmative Action and Companies continue to grapple with the issues of not only hiring, but also the retention of minorities, women, and people with disabilities. Now the stakes are higher. Pretty soon, only 15 percent of new workers coming into the workplace will be white men. The remaining 85 percent will be women, members of minority groups or immigrants. Additionally, the total number of workers entering the workplace will significantly decline. This places most employers I the precarious position of having to adjust quickly to these rapidly changing demographics.

Those employers whose goods and services are targeted toward these market segments, whose workforce does not reflect these changing demographics, also face missed opportunities for maximizing their revenue base. The following are a list of tips and suggestions for helping your company enhance its diversity recruitment and retention programs so that you will be prepared for the coming millennium.

Diversity Recruitment Suggestions and Tips

  1. Emphasize competence-based credentials rather than past experience.
  2. Encourage the placement of interns and co-op students who are members of diverse groups.
  3. Establish formal relationships with schools that have great diversity in their student body. This measure will ensure that you are always cultivating talent for your future talent pool.
  4. Make sure that all levels of management have received diversity training or they might not be in a position to give a fair evaluation during the hiring process.
  5. Cultivate organization partnerships with groups catering to the needs and interests of people of color, women, and the disabled.
  6. When using an interview panel, make sure that it is culturally diverse to minimize potential bias.
  7. Be sure that the qualifications established for a given position are really ones needed to do the job, and are not ones based on historical assumptions.
  8. Understand your own beliefs and attitudes about the positions that you are filling and the population that you are targeting. Be aware of how this could affect both the way you write job descriptions, as well as how you screen and interview.
  9. Incorporate nontraditional networking channels to produce a diverse applicant pool. A strong, diverse, informal network is a critical part of any successful diversity recruitment effort.
  10. Encourage senior people of color, women, and people with disabilities in your organization to assist in providing names of possible recruits.

That’s all for this month unless you have any ideas or suggestions? This is your chapter - let us know what’s on your mind!
