"A 360-degree View of Facilitation”
Wednesday, June 20, 2007 (5:15pm to 8:00pm)
Whether participants are working inside or outside an organization as an HR/OD consultant, it is important to understand the full life cycle of facilitation. Almost never does an effective facilitator begin their assignment by walking into a room and facilitating. Extensive pre-work, client consulting, and post-event follow up is all critical to ensuring the success of the facilitated event. In this session, Talisa Ernstmann will guide us through the full life cycle of a facilitation engagement…from pre-meeting activities, through the actual facilitation, to the post-meeting follow up…is defined and discussed. In addition, tools and techniques are presented that assist the facilitator through each of these individual phases, with the focus on maximizing the results of the engagement. Finally, overall practices and activities are reviewed that help ensure a successful facilitation engagement.
Talisa Ernstmann is president of Ernstmann Consulting, LLC. She has extensive experience working in large and small organizations, both commercial and government contracting. Talisa has in-depth experience in facilitating senior management teams, cross-functional teams, and intact work teams. Her work with senior management has included design and development of division off-sites and conferences, leading and facilitating strategic visioning processes, and strategic planning sessions, and assisting newly formed divisions with organizational structuring and operational plans. In addition, she has specialized in working with intact work teams. She has facilitated these teams in developing team visions, missions, objectives, and assisting them in defining team charters and roles and responsibilities. She has also led large cross functional teams working on critical organizational change efforts such as implementing professional development, alternative dispute resolution processes, and total quality management. Talisa also has extensive experience in the leadership development area. She has designed leadership programs for several Fortune 100 organizations and has specialized in designing programs that focus on solving real business problems. Talisa has worked with large teams of internal and external facilitators, and employed “best-in-class” learning methodologies and facilitation techniques. Most of the programs she has designed include individual coaching and mentoring components along with action learning and traditional leadership development methods. Throughout her career Talisa has also specialized in training management, design and delivery. She has extensive experience in managing large internal training and development functions, supervising budgets in excess of $1,000,000. She also has extensive experience in briefing senior management on program plans, status, and results. She has effectively measured the results of many of her strategic initiatives and linked program outcomes to increased organizational performance and productivity. Talisa holds an MGA (Human Resources Concentration) University of Maryland, a BS from the University of Maryland, her MBTI Certification, a Competent Toastmasters Certification, she is certified in TRW Managing Diverse Work Teams, HR Mediator, PDI Profilor, has continuous training in advanced facilitation skills, strategic visioning, presentation skills, and management and leadership training.

Chapter Discussion Group
"Research: Effective, Efficient Methods"
Thursday, June 7, 2007
Contributed by Cindy Loison, Discussion Group Director
When an uncommon situation arises at our workplace, frequently all eyes turn to Human Resources for guidance. What should we as HR practitioners recommend and how do we get that information? Bernadette Gebhardt, Human Resources Director at Martin’s Herend Imports, Inc., will facilitate a discussion on how to conduct research to gather information needed to expediently resolve issues.
In preparation, please reflect on the following questions:
- Are there basic steps that should always be followed when you research an issue?
- How do you know when the law applies?
- How do you research efficiently and effectively; i.e. determine what sources are best in your situation and then sort through mounds of information to get what you need?
- How do you organize and present information gathered and determine whether to store for future reference?
We encourage you to bring your favorite sources for researching to share and discuss how they have helped you get the information you need.
You are invited to bring examples from your experience, or, if you have had no previous experience in this area, consider this an opportunity to learn from your colleagues. You are welcome to extend an invitation to interested colleagues.
No fee is charged for attending. However, registration is required on-line, at least 24 hours in advance, via the Dulles SHRM website, www.dullesshrm.org, Career Growth/Chapter Discussion Groups. If you have questions, call Cindy Loison at 703-265-7520.
