In this presentation, Ed Ford, Vice President of Total Recognition for Michael C. Fina, answers today’s most critical employee recognition questions of CEOs, Senior Executives and Human Resource Professionals. Ford addresses how corporations can measure the results of our employee recognition and motivational programs; get top management to understand our recognition crisis; fully engage top management in developing and designing strategies adapted to the new reality; regain control of runaway employee recognition and awards; simplify processes so we can devote less time but have greater results; and identify and expose recognition myths primarily based on historical practices and biases which are crippling corporate recognition efforts. Ford reveals the quantitative research and measurement tools and process that determine the strategies and programs which result in achieving organizational objectives.
Ed Ford has been a practitioner in the Recognition Industry for more than 30 years. Throughout these dedicated years of service, he has consulted with hundreds of companies including many Fortune 1000 clients. He is currently with the Michael C. Fina Company in New York City as their Senior Vice President of Total Recognition. Ed is an active member of World at Work, SHRM and currently a Board of Trustee for FORUM People Performance Management and Measurement. He has presented countless Educational Seminars, Symposiums and Workshops in 20 major U.S. cities and Canada on the concept of a Total Recognition Strategy. Ed is the author of the “Official Recognition Workbook--A New Mandate for Employee Recognition Programs.” In addition, he has published a Workbook on the definition and design of nomination, on-the-spot and peer-to-peer programs, with 30 award-winning case studies. As the result of extensive field research, Ed Ford has recently published “Guidelines for a Total Recognition Strategy,” and authored numerous innovative HR articles for a variety of publications.
Ed loves to challenge Human Resource Professionals to reexamine current recognition practices and specifically recommends the “Best Practices” to Recognize and Reward Employees. Ed also conducts in-house executive previews. He presently heads up a Total Recognition Team, which performs on-location assessments, certification of facilitators, train-the-trainer, measurement, and designs Custom Total Recognition Programs. Ed is a self proclaimed iconoclast (i•con•o•clast Ahy-Kon-Uh-Klast) one who questions and seeks to change traditional ideas or institutions. Embry Rucker Shelter Donations Update
Members who attended the September meeting donated $51! The Embry Rucker Community Shelter provides 70 beds each night for men, women, and families. Dulles SHRM 2007 Scholarship Program

The Dulles SHRM Chapter is pleased to announce our fifth annual scholarship program. In support of the development of our chapter members, sons and daughters of chapter members, and students from local SHRM chapters, we have allocated $2,000.00 for scholarships, and up to two $1,000.00 scholarships may be awarded.
To qualify, applicants must be:
- A chapter member in good standing, a son or daughter of a chapter member in good standing, or a member of a local student chapter during the time of application and receipt of the award; AND
- Enrolled in a full-time or part-time program earning a degree in HR or an HR- related concentration in a college-level or graduate program.
We encourage chapter members and other eligible individuals to apply! Pursuing an education is expensive, and we look forward to providing these funds to deserving students!

Your Foundation at Work: "Generating Research-Based Knowledge”

Over the past ten years, the SHRM Foundation has funded more than $1 million in research grants for 79 research projects. The SHRM Foundation promotes the use of "research-based knowledge". Ever found yourself staring into your computer wondering how you got yourself into this and how you can ever know all that needs to be done much less do it? If you have been or are an HR Department of One you probably have felt this way many times!! It can be overwhelming to find that you are both the person who is responsible to know and direct the function and the one who does all the work. Tina Strasheim, SPHR, HR Manager of AgustaWestlandBell, LLC, will be leading the discussion group.
In preparation for this discussion, please reflect on the following questions:
- What resources are available?
- What resources do people use?
- What are the rewards?
- How does it impact your career development?
- How can I be strategic?
- How do I know what I don’t know?

From Dulles Airport: Take the Dulles Toll Road West (Route 267). Exit onto Leesburg Pike/VA-7 E toward Tysons Corner. Turn left at Westpark Drive. Turn right at Greensboro Drive. Turn right at Pinnacle Drive. 1753 will be on the right.
From Route 495: Take exit 46A for Chain Br Rd/VA-123 S toward Tysons Corner/Vienna. Merge onto Chain Bridge Rd/VA-123 S. Turn right at International Drive. Turn left at Greensboro Drive. Turn left at Pinnacle Drive.
Parking: All parking is free. You may park in the "Visitor" spaces in the parking lots, on the street, or in the visitor parking garage around the back of the building (the South Tower). Do not park in the bank branch spaces, as you may be towed.
Directions to Conference Center: Once you have parked, proceed to the main entrance of the Wachovia Building's North Tower (the side nearest to the Galleria Mall). If you are near the entrance with the bank branch (closest to the giant orange cell tower), proceed past the bank branch and through the main hallway to the North Tower, where you will see a large concierge desk. Take the elevators, located to the left of the concierge desk, up to the 3rd Floor and follow the signs to the Wachovia Conference Center. The seminar will take place in the Potomac Room.

Drug Free Work Week

DOL encourages organizations to seize the exciting educational opportunity that Drug-Free Work Week presents--this week, and all year long. Those who observe the week and conduct activities, however small in scope, are encouraged to let Working Partners know to assist in planning for next year’s Drug-Free Work Week.
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) wants to remind employers and employees that Sunday, October 14, marked the start of the second annual Drug-Free Work Week, October 14-20, 2007. The purpose of Drug-Free Work Week is to highlight the fact that working drug free is key to protecting workplace safety and to encourage workers with alcohol and drug problems to seek help.
The true spirit of Drug-Free Work Week lies in activities conducted by individual employers and their employees, and DOL’s Working Partners Web site offers a number of specific suggestions on how organizations can participate. Working Partners also is distributing various educational materials, including drug-free workplace fact sheets, “tool box talks” for construction sites, and posters and stickers with the slogan “Working Drug Free Works.” These, and other helpful materials, are available on the Working Partners Web site.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month
"Workers with Disabilities: Talent for a Winning Team"

Throughout October, which is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Office of Disability Employment Policy will profile on its Web site individuals who have personally benefited from agency-sponsored programs aimed at eliminating the chronic underemployment of people with disabilities, as well as employers and organizations that have successfully implemented strategies to hire, support, empower and otherwise value employees with disabilities.

Acting Assistant Secretary Karen M. Czarnecki Answers Questions from the Public
The Labor Department's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) frequently receives questions from the public regarding various disability and employment issues. Recently, ODEP compiled a list of typical inquiries, and posed them to the agency's Acting Assistant Secretary, Karen M. Czarnecki. Following are the questions and her answers.
Question: I'm a human resources director for a medium-size company whose president has charged us with recruiting disabled veterans for a variety of positions. We have a really small HR staff, and there are so many new organizations out there assisting our returning veterans that I don't know where to begin. Can you help?
Answer: ODEP's Employer Assistance and Recruiting Network (EARN) has a staff member, who himself happens to be a disabled Gulf War veteran, dedicated to helping employers locate job-ready disabled veterans. He can help you in three ways: First, he can help you navigate through the various service delivery systems to find qualified disabled veterans. Second, he can provide technical assistance to you as you create a welcoming environment for your new hire. Third, he can source your job postings with employment agencies that train and place disabled veterans. U.S. Labor Department awards nearly $1.9 million grant to establish National Technical Assistance Center on Transition and Employment for Youth with Disabilities
The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has awarded a 24-month cooperative agreement for $1,850,000 to the Institute for Educational Leadership's Center for Workforce Development in Washington, D.C., to establish a National Technical Assistance Center on Transition and Employment for Youth with Disabilities.
"It is essential that youth with disabilities receive the support they need to stay in school and succeed in the workplace, so that they can realize their dreams and ambitions for the future," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This nearly $1.9 million grant is to help ensure that youth with disabilities graduate from high school and get the assistance they need to continue their studies or enter the workforce."
"Talent for a Winning Team" Poster Available to the Public
The 2007 National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) poster, depicting this year’s theme, Workers with Disabilities: Talent for a Winning Team, is now available. In addition to its representation of the national NDEAM theme, this poster is popular throughout the year in connection with events that foster employment opportunities for workers with disabilities.
Each year, U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao selects the official theme. The Office of Disability Employment Policy leads the national recognition. Public Law 176, enacted by Congress in 1945, established October as the official month to recognize the contributions that individuals with disabilities have made to the workforce and the workplace.
