LOVE ‘EM OR LOSE ‘EM - GETTING GOOD PEOPLE TO STAY
By Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans

As the economy improves, employees who have been sticking it out until things look better “out there” may be getting ready to leave. Putting Kaye’s and Jordan-Evans’ ideas to work will keep them where they are. This book is a very easy read. Once you have checked through a few of the chapters, you can set it aside to refer to when a question or problem comes up. You’ll probably finish it, however, led on by the humor and creativity. Its 26 A to Z chapters present 26 different strategies or retention tools. The scenarios given as examples of the need for these interventions are realistic and familiar to all of us.

It is written for managers and is so user-friendly and complete that ideas can be lifted right off the pages and used verbatim so that the non-people-oriented have it all laid out for them. For HR, it provides a set of 26 resources ready to suggest or hand to the manager with problems. The J chapter as an example (J is for Jerk) provides a two-page quiz to help determine how much of one you may be turning into. N for Numbers gives you a reminder list of all the components involved in replacing people so that you can provide those hard facts to back up your case.

Managers of managers are encouraged to list the 26 and have their direct reports choose and use at least one technique. There are questions and To Do lists with each concept that are creative, easy, and, above all, completely practical. This is a handy and very practical resource.

Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em - Getting Good People to Stay is available from the SHRM Store at www.shrm.org ($18.95 for members).
